The nearly three-minute-long trailer looks grandiose and has a larger than life appeal. It has actress Deepika Padukone playing the titular role of Rani (Queen) Padmavati, actor Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh playing Alauddin Khilji. The trailer has grand and magnificent battle scenes embedded throughout.

Padmavati is based on an epic poem written in 1540 CE by Sufi poet Malik Muhammed Jayasi that narrates the tale of Padmavati and Ratan Singh of Chittor. Khilji, mesmerised by the beauty of Padmavati decides to go to war with Chittor in order to capture her. To save herself, Rani Padmavati along with other Rajput women commit mass-self-immolation (Jauhar). Today, these anecdotes have become legend that has been immortalised as fact instead of fiction by some Rajput groups. The movie is a fictionalised interpretation of this famous Rajput lore.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bansali is known for having an immense budget for his films and Padmavati is no exception. We can see that in the elaborate costumes that have been crafted for the film. A lot of research has gone into it which includes the costume designers Rimple and Harpreet Narula being taken to various locations to scout for materials. The designers explain that the story of Padmavati belonged to the 11th to 12th century, so the fabrics that were used or the embroideries that were made were all handmade and that is why they’ve opted for all organic fabrics. They have used mulls, chanderis and kotas for the costumes. There is also some authentic looking jewellery that all the actors adorn in the movie.

The making of Padmavati has been fraught with controversies since the time it was announced to be made. The film’s sets in Jaipur, in January were vandalized by members of a political fringe group, who were outraged by what they thought was going to be portrayed in the movie about the legendary queen. The movies sets were vandalized yet again in March in Kolhapur’s Masai plateau during the night. Despite such heavy losses, the movie has been completed and is set to hit theatres on the 1st of December.
