Toilet – Ek Prem Katha
The Akshay Kumar starrer turned out to be the perfect example of how to spread a social message with entertainment. It is one of the few substantial, script-backed movies that have done well in 2017. The best part about the movie was making the use of a love story to get the message across, for which the director Shree Narayan Singh deserves some kudos.
Kangana Ranaut has become the poster actor for one who speaks her mind and goes against the grain, so it was no surprise when she came back this year with a strong female centric movie yet again. Simran has been a refreshing story amidst the Bollywood masala cluster of movies. The film is a fascinating story of a housekeeping worker-turned gambler-turned robber and has everything you look for– drama, thrills, comedy, and even a little romance. This is why it’s the perfect film for a Best Picture nomination.
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan
This movie has been a surprise winner at the box office considering that it came to the forefront from an almost obscurity. The movie deals with the taboo subject of erectile dysfunction with the use of a premise of a love-cum-arranged-cum-love marriage arrangement. Just days away from their marriage the tense couple who learn of the problem is still struggling to make things work and their families find out about it. All of which makes for unending laughs and delivers a message too. The movie starred actors Ayushmann Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar.
