It’s been almost a decade since two-star kids, Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor made their acting debuts with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. While the movie itself was not a big commercial success, we got two rising stars. More than the film, both hogged the limelight for their alleged link-up at that time, soon followed by a fall-out! Now, if rumors are to be believed, director Raj Kumar Hirani has asked Sonam Kapoor to play Ranbir Kapoor’s love interest in his next, which is supposed to be Sanjay Dutt’s biopic. The two may not look eye-to-eye, but if everything falls right, these once-upon-a-time lovebirds will reunite on screen for Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming directorial venture.

However, we wonder which girlfriend of Sanjay Dutt she has been offered to play. For those who don’t know, Sanju baba has been linked to many Bollywood actresses of the 90s which include names like, Tina Munim, Madhuri Dixit, Rhea Pillai, and Nadia Durani. Hirani has been tight-lipped about the biopic casting so far, and Sonam has also not confirmed on this. Anushka Sharma will also be seen in the film, playing the role of a journalist.

This overambitious directorial project of Raj Kumar Hirani has always found itself in the midst of some controversy or hurdle, ever since it was announced. The Bollywood movie has been delayed umpteen times. Apparently, it was during the shooting of PK with Sanjay Dutt that the conception of this biopic cropped up in Hirani’s mind. But then the conviction and imprisonment of the actor were ordered by the court and the idea didn’t even get the shape. After coming out of jail, Sanju Baba started shooting for the official Hindi remake of the Sylvester Stallone classic Rambo, thus the film took a back seat. The film was further delayed due to date issues with Ranbir Kapoor (playing Dutt in the film). Ranbir opted to shoot for Ayan Mukherji’s “Dragon” before getting on with the Dutt biopic. The film which was slated to go on floors in August this year has been pushed to early 2017.

With biopics becoming a genre that has generated a lot of interest in the recent years (read M.S Dhoni, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom, Sarabjit and the upcoming Dangal) a Bollywood biopic and that too, one on someone like Sanjay Dutt would be a great boost to this genre. Let’s wish this biopic a speedy finish!
