We grew up reading the tale of Kabuliwala by Rabindranath Tagore. Undoubtedly, the Pashtun merchant was an adored character of many young kids, full of interesting stories to tell. Now, our favorite childhood character is back on screen, in Deb Medhekar’s upcoming drama, titled Bioscopewala. Based on Tagore’s short story, this film tells the story of a woman who meets an old man, who was the operator of a bioscope show that she loved in her childhood.
In the trailer that released recently, we see Geetanjali Thapa play the main role of Minnie Basu. Early on in the film, she hears the news of her father’s untimely passing in a plane crash. This character has been played by Adil Hussain, who is known for movies like Hotel Salvation/Mukti Bhavan, Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Angry Indian Goddesses. Back in the story, Minnie travels to her childhood home, where she meets her dead father’s old friend, played by veteran actor Danny Denzongpa. Back in her childhood days, this man used be known as ‘Bioscopewala’ as he would tell her stories with the use of his bioscope. After he has been charged for
murder, Minnie vows to reconnect with the man who taught her many stories. Connecting India and Afghanistan, a story of love and cinema gradually unfolds. Tisca Chopra and Ekavali Khanna also star in the film but their characters have not been revealed yet.
Bioscopewala releases in theatres on the 25th of May, 2018, alongside movies like Parmanu:The Story of Pokhran and Bhavesh Joshi. It may not be the most hyped movie release of the weekend, but it is sure to grab eyeballs.
