October, a Shoojit Sircar directorial, impressed viewers with a small glimpse into the theatrical, a story about love and longing, of a certain medical condition, tightly guarded between the closed interior of the hospital room and the secretive love written across the scenic beauty of Himachal Pradesh.
Sircar has made the film in his favorite city Delhi, a world which he understands well, and added nature’s touch by presenting a part of the screenplay in Himachal Pradesh. The idea for the film came from a small newspaper-cutting and his team soon churned it into a full-fledged drama feature.
As envisioned to be shot on a budget of 20CR only, for it to remain viable and profitable, apparently Varun Dhawan slashed his fee by a whopping 50% to accommodate the film.
The film revolves around Hotel Management interns who are rotated in shifts and duties, and expected to perform in every other department. Dan (Varun), a carefree 21 year old is dutiful and makes a few friends, but his life changes forever, when Shiuli (Banita) suffers a rare illness, which turns around their routine lives, unlike a
typical 21-year olds life, culminating into a bond so emotional, it leads to an internal awakening. October claims to be a story about love, not a love story.
The film’s makers have consistently jumped genres, with their last outings being Piku, Pink and now October. Varun was their first choice for the character, owing to his sincerity and star appeal. He blended well within his character, and worked hard to look like a genuine Hotel Management intern.
The film also stars UK-based student Banita Sandhu in this unusual plot, as Shoojit Sircar wanted a refreshing couple’s love story to play out in his narrative. Interestingly, Banita has previously worked with the director in an ad film.
It is a beautiful turnaround for Varun Dhawan, from his big budget productions, song and dance, as he fulfills the duties of a regular guy in love with his ailing partner, their relationship and several phases, which form the crux of the film October.
The film’s title came to Shoojit Sircar while playing his favorite sport football, a title which appeals to scriptwriter Juhi Chaturvedi as well, as she claims it carries the breath and smell of their film. How the month of ‘October’ is woven into the narrative is still to be seen. The film will release worldwide on 13th April 2018.
