In the year 2014, there was an exciting tweet on the official Twitter account of Dharma Productions announcing the remake of the cult classic Ram Lakhan, which released in 1989. Originally directed by Subhash Ghai, the film starred Jackie Shroff as the righteous elder brother Ram while the flamboyant Lakhan was played by Anil Kapoor. The film, the music, and the characters are popular even 28 years later. The remake was announced as a collaboration between two of the most popular directors of Bollywood – Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty. Karan Johar was to produce this movie which was all set to be helmed by Rohit Shetty.

However, in an interview with the Filmfare magazine, Rohit Shetty declared that the remake has been shelved and difficulty in casting two actors was cited as the reason for this. A quote from Rohit Shetty’s interview reads:

“No, the Ram Lakhan remake is not happening. Two stars don’t want to work together, they just want to promote each other’s films. This young lot, they will tweet for each other, but they will not work with each other.”
In the re-premeire of Ram Lakhan at New Excelsior Mukta A2 Cinema held on 6th May, the director Subhash Ghai commented on this saying that he understands that the directors are taking their time as they want to make the remake better. Ghai also stated that Ranbir Kapoor and Varun Dhawan were good choices for the lead roles.
