Directed by Ken Scott, The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir is a French-English language film starring Dhanush in the lead role. Dhanush is well-known for his award-winning work in Indian cinema, and his latest offering in Ken Scott’s film seems to be no less noteworthy. The film, which recently released in France, has impressed critics as well as the audiences overseas.
When asked about Dhanush, filmmaker Ken Scott said, “When I worked with Dhanush, I discovered a great actor and an amazing personality.” The first reviews of the film also emphasize that they discovered an incredible comedian in Dhanush who they mostly didn’t know before this film. The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir is also being praised for its humanism, warmth, and comedic quality.
It is based on the 2014 novel ‘The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe’ by Romain Puértolas which has been translated into 35 languages. The film was penned down by penned by Puértolas and Luc Bossi, who is also co-producing via his Paris-based company Brio Films. Other producers include Vamonos Films, Little Red Car Films, Scope Pictures, M! Capital Ventures, Impact Films and Aurora Global Media Capital.
In the film, Dhanush plays a street magician called Ajatashatru Lavash Patel who is based in Mumbai and not Rajasthan, unlike the book. He becomes a hustler and con-man who makes people believe that he has supernatural powers, tricking people into funding his trip to Europe in search of his estranged father. He embarks on an extraordinary voyage, travelling through the continent in an Ikea wardrobe.
The movie also stars The Artist lead Bérénice Bejo, Barkhad Abdi from Captain Phillips, Erin Moriarty, Abel Jafri, and Gérard Jugnot in pivotal roles. The film is set to be released in India in Tamil, Hindi and English.
