John Woo’s 1989 crime classic The Killer is getting its Hollywood remake and Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is all set to take over Chow Yun-fat’s titular role as the assassin. Woo will direct the remake as well as produce it along with Mark Gordon and Matt Jackson.
With a role in one the highest grossing films Black Panther and an Oscar for best supporting actress for 12 Years a Slave under her belt, we all know that Lupita Nyong’o never fails to deliver blockbuster hits. And for the few people that aren’t aware about the action scene in 1980s Hong Kong, John Woo’s The Killer catapulted this genre into the international spotlight and had a serious influence on later directors like Quentin Tarantino. So we know that this is going to be a match made in heaven!
The original 1989 movie, starring Chow Yun-Fat, Danny Lee, and Sally Yeh quickly became a classic and even led to Woo being hired by Hollywood studios. It also catapulted Chow Yun-fat into a major star. He played a hardened hitman with a soft heart who takes it upon himself to help get treatment for eyes of a singer (Sally Yeh) that he accidentally damaged during a job gone bad.
Eran Creevy wrote the script of the remake based on an original draft by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken. Teaming up with Universal, Woo will return to direct the talented Lupita Nyong’o in the lead role. And we can’t wait to see what this acclaimed actress has to offer to this legendary role!
