Laika’s Kubo and the Two Strings takes on Japanese Folklore

Laika's Kubo and the Two Strings review

The Oregon-based animation house Laika is all set for the release of its latest stop-motion fantasy Kubo and the Two Strings. Helmed by Travis Knight, the story is set in Ancient Japan and follows Kubo, a young boy who likes to weave tall tales for anyone who will listen. The movie marks the directorial debut of Travis, the CEO of Laika. The script is by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler. Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron have rendered their voice to two of the pivotal characters in the film.

Kubo, voiced by Art Parkinson from Games of Throne, is a young boy whose humble existence as an honest storyteller is interrupted by a spirit from the past that has returned to enforce an age-old vendetta and plunges him into a search for his father’s magical armour in order to survive. He is now on a run to discover the fate of his parents — in particular his father — and to retrieve three items that will become key in defeating the forces of evil. In his quest to save his family, a snow monkey (voiced by Charlize Theron ) and a wiseacre samurai beetle (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) help him. Together they face evils – the slippery Moon King (Ralph Fiennes) and a pair of evil twin sisters (both voiced by Rooney Mara) – who try to cause problems for Kubo.

Kubo and the Two Strings is also unique in the sense that the animation in the movie is not computer generated. The animation artists for this film worked in the time-honored traditions of stop-motion, which is a painstaking and a time-consuming process. The music score is given by Dario Marianelli. A new version of Beatles classic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” is used as the theme of the film.

The film also marks Matthew McConaughey’s first animated movie as a voice artist. The Oscar-winning actor plays a light-hearted, human-turned- insect, wiseacre samurai beetle in this fantasy adventure. He is joined by Charlize Theron, who is rendering voice for the character of Snow Monkey in the film. Both the Beetle and Snow Monkey help Kubo in his quest to defeat the evil forces.

Like all the previous three films of Laika, Kubo and the Two Strings is distributed by the Focus Features. The quest of Kubo begins on August 19 th . Are you ready to be a part of his journey?
