The star-studded cast of Ocean’s 8 pulled off a solid debut in its first week at the North American box office. Clocking in at a strong $41.5 million, this gender-flipped version of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise opened stronger than its earlier films and rose to the top.

The credit for this could go to the casting with the film starring some of the best-known women in Hollywood. The all-female team included Oscar winners and nominees like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, with TV stars Sarah Paulson and Mindy Kaling, and also musicians Rihanna and Awkwafina.

“We exceeded our expectations. There’s always been a lack of movies [female-led projects]. I’m glad audiences enjoyed it as much as we did.”
This sharp and stylish reboot of the Ocean’s heist franchise set a new high Warner Bros. and for the movies thanks to this all-female cast. Directed by The Hunger Games filmmaker Gary Ross, it offers up a new twist on the franchise previously led by actor George Clooney as Danny Ocean in the three previous movies.

Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of the con man Danny, played by Clooney. After a stint in prison, Debbie leads the pack as she puts together an unstoppable team of crooks. As these partners-in-crime return back into old habits, their target is the ultra-exclusive Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And their mission is to steal a $150 million diamond necklace is this high-stakes heist featuring a crew of brilliant women criminals.
