War Dogs Movie Review – A Satire on War

War Dogs movie review

Todd Phillips’s aggressive new comedy, War Dogs is both a funny and thrilling movie that will keep you glued to seat for the entire runtime of 1 hrs 55 minutes. It’s a true story of two young men from Miami, David Packouz (Miles Tiller) and Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill), who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm American allies in Afghanistan. It’s a film that completely ignores the wars and gives a reality check on how it becomes a business for every opportunist. Apparently, the movie is based on a Rolling Stone article by Guy Lawson, that eventually became a book.

War Dogs is the story of two friends in their early 20s, David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, played by Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, respectively, living in Miami Beach. They are small-time arms dealers who rake in big money and are living the high life. Then, comes their big fortune when they conned their way into a 300 million dollar deal to arm the U.S. military in Afghanistan, during the Iraq war – a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

It’s a war movie without a single war scene! War just plays a convenient backdrop in this Hollywood Comedy film, which can best be described a “Satire on War Business”. Miles Teller and Jonah Hill bring in their dose of comedy and entertainment that leaves you in splits. The movie is a light humour but with a hard reality check at the end. Both the actors deliver superb performances. They provide plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in the film, especially in the first half. Bradley Cooper appears in the film in a short but memorable role. The music of the film is enjoyable. Todd Phillips, who has directed several outrageous comedies like Road Trip, Old School, Due Date, and The Hangover series, picked up this true story about the war situation in America, laced it with his style of humour and delivered a satirical comedy-drama.

Mostly getting good reviews from both critics and masses, War Dogs is a light-hearted Hollywood comedy movie that will keep you engaged and entertained. Watch War Dogs to get a reality check on how war has become a business for opportunists! The movie exposes the capitalist side of a war.
