Even though Bollywood has seen a number of sequels, there are but a few that have done very well at the box office. With a sequel, there is a chance of losing out on the brand value that the preceding movie has created and that makes it a risky business. Making a movie in the shadow of another and fulfilling audience’s expectations is one mean task. With the upcoming buddy flick Fukrey Returns hitting cinemas soon, we take a look at some sequels over the years that have developed a cult following and have done well at the box office too.
1. Hera Pheri & Phir Hera Pheri
Hera Pheri is a cult classic not to be missed, with its rib-tickling comedy and the antics of the peculiar character Baburao, the movie became a stellar hit. Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty too delivered smashing performances. Audiences lapped it up because of its relatability and the plotline’s ability to engage with everyday people. The movie defies all logic and revolves around a wrong number. Phir Hera Pheri, the sequel did well at the box office too and delivered some great laughs.
2. Munna Bhai MBBS & Lage Raho Munnabhai
Another cult classic simply because of the pairing of Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi playing Munna and Circuit, an inseparable pair, one being a small time don and the other his trusted assistant and friend is a must watch if you haven’t seen it already. The sequel to the movie, Lago Raho Munnabhai too fared well at the box office and received critical appraisal as well, with Vidya Balan playing the don’s love interest who happens to be a radio jockey and with an unexpected touch of some Gandhian values, the movie was much loved and admired by audiences.
3. Dhoom, Dhoom 2 & Dhoom 3
The Indian Fast & Furious is what the Dhoom franchise has been dubbed to be, albeit with a few changes. The movie gave actor John Abraham the break he needed and made him a success overnight. It did much for the careers of Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra as well. Dhoom 2 with actors Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai made up for the eye candy factor that was missing in the previous movie and with Aamir Khan entering the fray in its third instalment, the movie broke all box office records.
There have been many more such successful franchise’s such as the Golmaal series, Tanu Weds Manu, Ab Tak Chappan and the Welcome series, all of which did well at the box office.
