The trailer for the third installment of Disney and Pixar’s super successful movie franchise, “Cars” is out and it suggests a serious shift from its predecessors. Best known for its light-hearted characters and fun stories, Cars 3 seems to deliver a different kind of story, one that is sad, emotional and dark. Cars 3 it seems has literally put a serious spin on what has traditionally been a very bright and cheery franchise.
The 49-second long teaser trailer of Cars 3 portrays the main character of the series, racing car Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), spinning out in the middle of a race, followed by a slow-motion shot of McQueen busting into a cloud of wreckage. And just before the car makes an impact on the ground, the movie’s new tagline appears: “From this moment, everything will change.” Its really sad to see Lightning McQueen, smoking and twirling above the track, deeply boned.
Cars are one of Pixar’s most loved and commercially successful franchises to date. “Cars” and “Cars 2” were box office hits and garnered a lot of love and affection from the audiences. A racing car, Lightning McQueen has always been the hero of this franchise and fans love this red-color sports car. But the makers it seems (judging from the trailer) have decided to switch things up with Cars 3. If the trailer is anything to go by, McQueen is seen breaking apart and destroyed very badly (beyond repairs) and perhaps dead. Disney/Pixar sort of have a history of dramatizing the 3 rd installments of their franchises. Remember Toy Story 3? So, it’s not surprising seeing the makers going a bit darker this time with Cars 3.
In Cars 3 Owen Wilson will once again voice Lightning McQueen, while Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, and Daniel Lawrence Whitney (AKA Larry the Cable Guy) will also reprise their respective roles. The storyboard artist Brian Fee will direct the film. The Hollywood animation film is scheduled to release in June next year. Earlier this year, we saw Pixar release yet another sequel, Finding Dory, the follow up of their super successful 2003 film, Finding Nemo. Cars 3 will be followed by the release of few more sequels; The Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4.
So fans are you ready to hit the race track again with the legendary race car Lightning McQueen? Pixar’s Cars 3 is all set to take us back to Route 66 in June next year!
