Not all sequels are bad and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again appears to be a good one. In the nearly three-minute-long trailer, we see the story moving ahead with Sophie, now running the Greek villa, greeting her mom’s friends at the pier and announcing her pregnancy to them. Sophie is overjoyed but tells Tanya (Christine Baransky) and Rosie (Julie Walters) that she is doubtful if she’ll be able to cope without her late mother there to help her.
Tanya and Rosie begin to recount how Sophie’s mother, Donna (Meryl Streep) managed to navigate motherhood as a young woman. Through a series of flashbacks, we see how all our beloved characters were when they were younger. Suffice to say, this would make for a great movie to watch with our mothers and we might even shed some tears.
There are some ABBA’esque moments that you can’t help but smile at as well. The downer for fans however is the fact that the trailer makes it seem as though Meryl Streep’s character Donna is entirely absent from the film. However, the poster for the film does have her on it. If it’s any consolation, Cher makes a grand entrance towards the end of the trailer as Sophie’s grandmother! Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is set to hit theatres on the 20th of July 2018.
