If you were in the lucky lot who got to attend Ed Sheeran’s concert in Mumbai last weekend, you can’t stop drooling over his performance we know. But if you happened to miss it, then you just couldn’t miss his Indian attire during the performance. The kurta, which Sheeran paired with a pair of jeans, was inspired by his genre-defying third studio album ÷ (DIVIDE) and was gifted to him by Farzana Balpande, head of BookMyShow’s charity initiative BookASmile. The kurta was not a part of his performance wardrobe though, and was gifted to the singer less than a couple of hours before he took to the stage.
“When Ed Sheeran performed in India for the first time in 2015, we noticed that he had worn a kurta. This time, we decided to design and get one made for him, inspired by his album. To give it a more Indian touch, his album name was written in Hindi at the back of the kurta. When we presented it to him, he was overjoyed and his reaction gave us hope that he may actually wear it for at least some part of his performance. When he finally walked on to the stage wearing it, we were absolutely honoured and thrilled by his gesture,” says Farzana Balpande.
Every element of the kurta was hand painted and was specially designed keeping in mind the theme colour of his album. The blue-eyed English musician, Ed Sheeran, played all the right chords to make thousands of Indians sing their lungs out on this Sunday evening.
