They were sure that their show won’t be popular for any longer than three years. Today, it’s been twenty-five. Yes, this the story of STOMP, an infectious mix of percussion, dance, theatre and comedy with an exhilarating soundtrack inspired by the commotion of everyday life. They ‘they’ we mentioned earlier are none other than the creators of STOMP, Luke Creswell and Steve McNicholas.
Having left school at the age of fifteen, Luke’s passion for music was unquestionable, but his career in it was always on the edge of a sword. A self-taught percussionist, he took up drumming at the age of nine and after a decade of work as a street performer and musician, he created STOMP in 1991. Further on, he has not only collected accolades in music, but is also an award-winning film maker, has directed commercial and feature length films and has received a special achievement award from the Chicago Human Rhythm Project for ‘Ground-breaking achievement in Tap and Percussive Dance’. Steve McNicholas, on the other hand, is a musician, actor, singer and writer and has worked with various theatrical and musical groups throughout his career. An achiever in his own right, Steve too is a theatre and music genius and holds a joint honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Brighton with Luke.
Having toured all the corners of the globe, STOMP this year is coming to India. The most mind-bending musical experience ever, STOMP has not only achieved phenomenal popularity in the UK where it first originated, but also across the world. Having stuck with its original west-end cast, this British theatrical sensation is inspired by the commotion of everyday life. The performers use everything from Zippo lighters, bin lids, and even the kitchen sink to hammer out an explosively feel-good rhythm that can be enjoyed by young and old alike.
Known for crazy rhythm projects, STOMP stands out also because it has humour as its parallel ingredient along with music. The popularity also soars day on day because the makers have, over the years, always tried to improve the show, reinvent it, keep it fresh and make individual personalities of the performers an integral part of it. There really are no barriers to STOMP and that is maybe one of their biggest strengths.
Brought on the Indian’s stage by AGP World, STOMP is all set to indulge the Indian audience this December. With tickets to this unconventional musical being available on our website, it’s time you block not your calendars, but your seats too!
