The Premier Badminton league 2017 kicked off earlier on Sunday, January 1 at Hyderabad. This season promises some high-octane badminton action, new baddie transformation of the players and also a greater scope for the sport in the country. This time, while teams have been able to retain many of their key players, some have been shuffled around completely. The event features six teams clashing for a prize purse of Rs 6 crore and all the teams are looking well matched, which means that we are in for another close contest this year. Indian star players include Parupalli Kashyap and B Sumeeth Reddy (Chennai Smashers), Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth (Awadhe Warriors), Jwala Gutta (Delhi Acers), Ajay Jayaram (Mumbai Rockets), P.V Sindhu, Sai Praneeth and Sameer Verma (Hyderabad Hunters), Saurabh Verma (Bengaluru Blasters).

The clash of champions gained a lot of spectators when 2016 Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin from Hyderabad Hunters beat Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu from Chennai Smashers 11-8, 12-14, 11-2 in the PBL 2017 opener on Sunday. Maintaining her good form, Marin defeated Saina Nehwal 15-14, 11-5 , the very next day to give Hyderabad Hunters their sole win of the day in their tie against Awadhe Warriors at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. While both Saina Nehwal and Marin are suffering from injuries, the olympic winner managed to seize victory in both crucial matches and give an amazing show to the audiences. Later on the second day, the nation’s favourite PV Sindhu put the Chennai Smashers on a streak for a win when she defeated Cheung Ngan Yi of Bengaluru Blasters in PBL 2017 on Tuesday. Chennai went on to win by a 5-0 scoreline. Chennai seems like a strong contender in the league and PV Sindhu will be unstoppable if she keeps rolling like this.

In other matches, Delhi Acers were handed a humiliating defeat by Awadhe Warriors as they lost the tie in the Premier Badminton League match on Thursday. With this win, Lucknow team reaches at the top of the table with 11 points and Delhi are still at the bottom with the least points. Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal defeated Nitchaon Jindapol as Awadhe Warriors defeated Delhi Acers 6-1 to register their second win in the second edition of the this badminton tournament. Saina outplayed Nitchaon 14-12 11-7 in a crucial match to register her first win of the league and helped her team take advantage over the Acers. By virtue of this, Saina has extended her unbeaten streak to eight games against the Thai player.

It seems like PBL Season 2 has the potential to make a similar impact for badminton as witnessed with other sports in the country of the same format like Cricket and Football. These were some of the top highlights from week one and it will continue to get more exciting as each day passes. The game is at it’s peak now and will continue to amaze you if you’re a badminton person. We suggest you to not miss out on these amazing matches where the top players confront their top competitors and move closer to the title in this one of the best sports event.
