The story of the film revolves around Anushka’s character, Shashi, who is a spirit. The story and concept of the film is unique and has shades of romance, drama and fun. Anushka Sharma has never played a spirit/ghost in a film. It's a first-of-its-kind role for her.

The film is helmed by a debut director, Anshai Lal and is written by Anvita Dutt. Anshai Lal started his career as an assistant director to Saket Choudhary for Pyaar Ke Side Effects in 2006. Later on he assisted Shimit Amin for Chak De India (2007). With Phillauri he is making his debut as a director. The film is presented by Fox Star Studios and Clean Slate Films.
