The 18th IIFA Awards culminated on July 16 at New York, and like every year, it was a grand celebration of every thing Indian film industry is about. This year, it was all more special as the entire film industry celebrates the 25 years of Madras Maestro, A.R. Rahman in Indian cinema. Such was the enthusiasm and spirit at the at MetLife stadium in New York on July 14th, where Rahman performed, that even the incessant rains could not dampen the mood. And finally the Maestro came on stage and enthralled the audience like never before.

The hosts for the night were Manish Paul and Riteish Deshmukh, who were at their comic best and kept the audience in splits with their one liners. IIFA Rocks started with Kamal Khan singing all his chartbuster songs. Diljit Singh Dosanjh came next and gave a spectacular performance. Along with the performances, the technical awards were also distributed.

And then finally came the man himself, A.R. Rahman. All the while the audience was waiting calmly and patiently for him, and when he came on stage, the excitement level reached its peak. Rahman started with his popular track from Dil Se and he was joined on stage by the very talented Jonita Gandhi, Neeti Mohan, Javed Ali, Benny Dayal, Kailash Kher, and Hariharan. Other numbers that kept the audience asking for more included ‘Dil Hai Chota Sa’ (Roja), ‘Agar Tum saath Ho’ (Tamasha), ‘Naadan Parindey’ (Rockstar) ‘Humma Humma’ (Bombay) and ‘Enna Sonna’ (Ok Jaanu). Rahman also promoted his social initiative, ‘One Heart Foundation’ to help people from the industry. He was also presented with a special award for completing 25 years in the industry at the IIFA awards.

Just a few days ago, Rahman performed at the Wembley stadium in London and sparked a controversy. Apparently, a group of people walked out of his concert because he was mostly singing his Tamil songs. He was even trolled on social media for this. But undeterred by this behaviour and criticism of fans, the musical maestro performed at IIFA Rocks like a king and gave his fans an evening to cherish for long.

The IIFA Awards Night the next day at the same venue was equally grand and glittery as the stars and superstars of Bollywood walked the green carpet amidst rains. IIFA event rocked this time as well as it does every year.
