Indian cinema had a glorious beginning a hundred years ago! India's romance with the big screen began, and thus began the journey which was to give us such a rich heritage. And in this journey, the era that stood out was 1960s. 1960s movies not just captured the box office with their cinematic excellence, but also carved out a niche for themselves in people's memory forever. It was the time when a lot of classic movies graced the silver screens.

Here's a list of five classic films from 1969 that proved why this year was indeed called the Golden era of Hindi cinema.

1. Do Raaste
Directed by Raj Khosla, Do Raaste was a beautiful drama movie based on a joint family dynamics and the daily frictions in a lower middle class society. With a star cast that included Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz, Balraj Sahni, Kamini Kaushal, Prem Chopra and Bindu and lovely songs like ‘Bindiya Chamkegi’, ‘Yeh Reshmi Zulfen’ and ‘Chup Gaye Sare Nazare, Do Raaste was one of the highest grossing films of the year.

2. Satyakam
Satyakam is Hrishikesh Mukherjee's best film and a landmark in the history of Hindi cinema. Dharmendra played the character of Satyapriya in the film which is considered as one of the most powerful performances by a male actor in that decade. The film also starred Sharmila Tagore, Sanjeev Kumar and Ashok Kumar.

3. Aradhana
Aradhana was one of the few Hindi old movies that touched upon the social taboos of unmarried mothers, adoption and a lost love. These topics were really bold for that time to be displayed on big screen. This critically acclaimed film which starred Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna, has touched on so many social issues surrounding love and acceptance. The film is also known for its romantic and soulful music, composed by S. D. Burman on the lyrics of Anand Bakshi.

4. Bandhan
Bandhan is one of the greatest hits of 1969. Starring the hit jodi of Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz, Bandhan is counted among the 17 consecutive hit films Rajesh Khanna between 1969 and 1971. The film is also remembered for its music, composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

5. Ek Phool Do Maali
This was one of the best works of actor Balraj Sahni . He even earned a Filmfare nomination as the Best Supporting Actor for this film. Directed by Devendra Goel, the film was a box office hit of the year.
