One of the most celebrated T-20 tournaments, the Indian Premier League is back with its 11th edition. IPL 2018 is all set to begin on April 7th, 2018. The tournament will kick-start its eleventh year with an opening ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. A total of 9 venues will play host to 60 matches across 51 days.
The opening match will see defending champions Mumbai Indians play against Chennai Super Kings. A two-time winner in the tournament, CSK had to serve a two-year suspension. Both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are returning to the league after a gap of 2 years. Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions, the franchises that were formed before the advent of IPL 2016 were discontinued based on the contract.
Meanwhile the second match will see Delhi Daredevils playing against Kings XI Punjab at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, New Delhi.
169 players were brought by eight franchises in a two-day auction to fill a slot of 182 players. Indian captain Virat Kohli was retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore at the much publicised IPL retentions.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni returned to Chennai Super Kings and fans cannot control their excitement. Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina were also retained by CSK.
Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians’ most successful captain, was yet again retained by MI. “Rohit and MI are synonymous while Hardik and Bumrah are special for us. We are happy that we were able to retain some players. Hardik and Bumrah are pillars of our franchise”, Akash Ambani said.
Gautam Gambhir who led Kolkata Knight Riders for seven years was bought by Delhi Daredevils at the IPL 2018 auctions. Whereas, KKR announced Dinesh Karthik as the captain for IPL 2018.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s mentor VVS Laxman said, “It was a great opportunity to retain some players. We wanted to pick impact players who can take team forward and impact is the right word for SRH.” This year there are multiple players who will make their debut at IPL 2018.
This edition of IPL will have a total of 12 matches played at 4.00 PM IST and 48 matches played at 8 PM IST. The IPL schedule disclosed that the much anticipated final between the winners of Qualifier 1 and winners of Qualifier 2 will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 27th, 2018.
