T20 Mumbai League: “Be competitive but play fair” Sachin Tendulkar Tells Young Players

The much-awaited T20 Mumbai League finally kick-started at the Wankhede Stadium on 11th March. With 6 teams competing against each other, the tournament is scheduled from 11th March to 21st March, 2018. The league which had been in the works for several years is deemed to be a platform for budding players across the city.

Cricket icon, Sachin Tendulkar was named as the League Ambassador. Whereas, Sunil Gavaskar was appointed as League Commissioner and former captain Dilip Vengsarkar, the Chief Mentor.

At the inaugural ceremony on Saturday, Sachin Tendulkar showered words of wisdom on the young players by urging them to not only play fearlessly but also respect the opposition. When asked of the league this is what Tendulkar had to say:

“My message to all youngsters here is to be competitive and play cricket as hard as you can, but you got to play it fair. With appreciation and recognition, do not forget that the game has got you here. So don’t disrespect the game. I think this league will be very important for Mumbai cricketers. It’s all about getting opportunities and providing a platform to express yourself. For any sportsman, the most important thing is recognition and appreciation. This league is going to do that and also provide employment to support staff. Even ten years ago, there were no such leagues where we could have a career playing any sport.”

He also addressed the senior cricketers by saying, “For senior cricketers, this is your golden opportunity to share all your knowledge with youngsters. I feel with international cricketers participating in this tournament, it’s going to be really special for youngsters.” Tendulkar said he looked forward to watching Prithvi Shaw perform and was all praises for the young cricketer who won the under-19 World Cup this year.

Along with the unveiling of the trophy, the ceremony also saw performances from Bollywood A-listers like Madhuri Dixit, Siddharth Malhotra and Kriti Sanon and other cultural performances.

Players like Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, and Shubham Ranjane amongst several others are a part of the tournament. The first match which was held on 11 th March saw ARCS Andheri beat North Mumbai Panthers by 23 runs. All matches will be held at the Wankhede Stadium. Whereas, the final match is scheduled on 21st March, 2018.
