People in India love sports. While their favorite sport is cricket, thanks to many new leagues, other sports are getting popular too. Some of these leagues are the International Premier Tennis League , Indian Super League and the Hockey India League. They have worked wonders for tennis, football and hockey respectively.

While the International Premier Tennis League and the Indian Super League were held at the end of 2015, the country is now looking forward to the Hockey India League. The league was founded in 2013 and the first tournament was held in the same year. The teams participating in the 2016 edition of this Hockey league are the Delhi Waveriders, the Ranchi Rays, the Jaypee Punjab Warriors, the Uttar Pradesh Wizards, the Dabang Mumbai H.C and the Kalinga Lancers.

The Ranchi Rays have been the most successful team of this league as they have won the title more than once. They were initially known as the Ranchi Rhinos, but were renamed in the 2015 season. Talking about renaming, the Dabang Mumbai H.C were previously called the Mumbai Magicians.

The 2016 season of the Hockey India League will begin on 21st January and culminate one a month later. The matches will be held at Delhi, Bhubaneshwar, Mumbai, Jalandhar, Ranchi and Lucknow. This ensures that each team enjoys the advantage of the home crowd. The tournament has both local and international players participating in it. Each team is allowed to have fourteen Indian players and ten international ones. Indian mid-fielder, Sardar Singh is one of the highest paid players in the league. Jamie Dwyer and he are the league’s brand ambassadors.

The main aim to start this league was to promote hockey in the country. After all, it is considered as the National Game of the country and often went unnoticed. The league provides young hockey players a chance to showcase their talent. Another good part is that they get to compete with some big international names. This league has definitely been instrumental in increasing the popularity of the sport in India as most of the matches fetch a good crowd.

The Hockey India League is about to begin and fans are already gearing up for this fantastic tournament. If the matches are held in your city, make sure you watch them at the stadium.
