ISL 2017-2018: David James and Ashley Westwood Called In By Kerala Blasters and ATK

Written by Varsha Pillai

It looks like a déjà vu moment for both the finalists of the last season of Indian Soccer League. ATK and Kerala Blasters had appointed stalwarts as their coaches. Both teams managed to sack their coaches mid – season.

Rene Meulensteen and Teddy Sheringham were roped in last season to coach the teams to victory. Both the coaches were terminated midway. They couldn’t cope up with the short term nature of the league. Now, the clubs have decided to bring in coaches who are familiar with the Indian Football culture. This season, Ashley Westwood is the interim coach for ATK. Ashley Westwood is responsible for building the base for ATK. Injuries have plagued the team and they are yet to score a point under Westwood.

While for Kerala Blasters, they have David James who was brought in to stabilize the team. David James had helmed the team last season to the finals. Injuries have been a matter of concern for Kerala Blasters too, but the team has had a better fate, thanks to its zeal.

Defending champions ATK are hosting Kerala Blasters in a match this Thursday at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. For Kerala Blasters, this match is pivotal to ensure that they stay in the Top 4. While for ATK, they have lost the last four matches they have played. Winning this match would mean redemption for the team.

Both the teams will battle for a coveted Top 4 spot at ISL 2017-2018 and only time would tell the fate of each team.
