After so many speculations and fanboying over one of the most prestigious awards of the year in the football fraternity, the ice has finally been broken. Last night Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo beat Lionel Messi of Barcelona to win the Ballon d’Or award for the fifth time. He has won this award for the second time in a row and there by adding more feathers to his cap yet. The victory took the 32-year-old Portugal international level with 30-year-old Argentine Messi, who won the most recent of his five awards in 2015.
Ballon d’Or 2017 awards ceremony were held in Paris and former Tottenham and Newcastle winger David Ginola presented the Ballon d’Or 2017 awards ceremony this year. The organisers France Football revealed that Ronaldo beat the 29 other nominees to win the award, and was voted by a group of 173 journalists. He has managed to win Ballon d’Or four times before this in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016, and Messi is the only other recipient of the award since 2009.
After receiving the award on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, he said, “This is something I look forward to every year. Thanks to my Real Madrid team-mates. And I want to thank the rest of the people who helped me reach this level.” The 2016-17 was a splendid season for this footballer. After helping Portugal win Euro Cup 2016, he scored 42 goals for Real Madrid in all competitions as they won their 33rd La Liga title and 12th UEFA Champions League.
With this win we hope both these star footballers spread their magic in the coming FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia as the poster is already released and the fanatics are eagerly awaiting for the best sport event of the year in 2018.
