From “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere” to “Yamla Pagla Deewana”, Dharmendra has dedicated half a century of his life to entertaining us with his films. One of the most loved and versatile actors of Indian cinema, he has acted in nearly two hundred and fifty films and is still going strong. From romance to action, Dharmendra has done it all. The Padma Vibhushan Awardee was the charisma king way before Shah Rukh Khan came into being. And he is still considered as one of the most handsome men to walk the path of showbiz in India. As the legend turns 80 today, let's go back in time and relive the top 5 movies that we think are the best works of Dharam Paaji till date.
Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat is considered by many as the best war movie ever made in India. Made in the backdrop of the India-China war, Dharmendra played the role of Captain Bahadur Singh in the film who falls in love with a Ladakkhi girl. This is considered as one of the monumental performances by Dharamji.
A classic creation of Bimal Roy, Bandini comes across as one of the finest performances of Dharmendra despite it being a female-centric film. He was not the central character of the film but known for delivering his part seamlessly in an innate manner.
3. Chupke Chupke
Prior to Chupke Chupke, Dharmendra was established as a man who could play serious and action roles with utter ease. Hrishikesh Da's Chupke Chupke brought to light this man's hilarious capabilities. The movie also starred some superb actors such as Om Prakash, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bachchan, Asrani, Keshto Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan.
This movie doesn't need an introduction. The film and every character in the film went on to achieve cult status and inspired generations to come in Bollywood. Dharmendra's Veeru, Amitabh's Jai, Hema Malini's Basanti and Amjad Khan's Gabbar are the characters which are immortal in Indian cinema. Dharmendra blended the comic side of the character of Veeru with the central theme of Sholay i.e. action so effortlessly.
Satyakam is Hrishikesh Mukherjee's best film and a landmark in the history of Hindi cinema. Dharmendra played the character of Satyapriya in the film which is considered as one of the most powerful performances by a male actor in that decade. The film also starred Sharmila Tagore, Sanjeev Kumar and Ashok Kumar.
Dharamji gave some of the best performances of his era, outlined the prime of an alpha male in the industry and at the same time gave us the laughs, whistles and the tears.
