Mughal-E-Azam – A Spectacular Musical Extravaganza!

Some movies make history and K. Asif’s Mughal-E-Azam (1960) is one of them. After about 5 decades, Mughal-E-Azam again set to charm audiences, this time not on screen but on stage.

The timeless love story of Prince Salim and the courtesan Anarkali will be presented on the stage of NCPA by Feroze Abbas Khan. With costumes designed by Manish Malhotra, technical expertise from Broadway and original hit songs such as “Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya” and “Teri Mehfil Mein Kismet Aazma Kar”, the production promises to be an enthralling experience.

It took K Asif almost 10 years to make this classic film and till date there has never been any film that comes close to its sheer grandeur, magnitude and musical brilliance. Just to think of recreating it, and that so on stage is a challenging task. Feroze Abbas Khan attempted this and for the first time the Indian stage witnessed and experienced a theatrical adaptation of this iconic movie of Indian film industry. With over 300 people behind this mighty production, Mughal-E-Azam, the play is considered as one of India’s first Broadway musical experiences. It is one of the few plays in Mumbai that received such an overwhelming reception that the makers have returned for the second time now to enthral the audiences again with this magical love story of Salim and Anarkali.

Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, famous for his hit plays Tumhari Amrita and Mahatma Vs. Gandhi, the play aims at recreating this magnificent film on stage and take it a step further. While K Asif sourced the original costumes from Agra, Hyderabad and Surat, Feroz Abbas Khan has roped in designer Manish Malhotra for the outfits, Emmy-nominated projection designer John Narun, award-winning lighting director David Lander for his theatrical adaptation of Maughal-E-Azam. Six songs from the movie, composed by Naushad have been retained in the play along with two new numbers created especially for the show. Construction company, Shapoorji Pallonji, which produced the film 56 years ago, is co-producing the musical along with the NCPA. Mughal-E-Azam is one of the biggest events in NCPA.
