Kolkata Theatre Play Events
Written by Archit Chawla

The most important aspect of contemporary Bengali drama and plays is a renewed questioning mood about the nature of social problems and a searching look at individual motives and behavior. Bengali theater, in its long history, has shown an astounding resilience. But when there is an alarming fall in values and standards in nearly every sphere of social life in Bengal, it may be unrealistic to expect resurgence in an isolated field of creative endeavor. So if you like Bengali drama and want to experience some untold stories, check out the list we have prepared for you to enjoy this summer.

Bohipeer Bohipeer is a classic tale told by the renowned novelist and playwright from Bangladesh, Syed Waliullah. This is based on a story of a 17-year-old girl Tahera, who is forced to marry an old peer, fixed by her father and stepmother. Tahera runs away from the marriage and is picked up by the wife of Zamindar Hatem Ali and is confronted with the bitter truths of life. Come and see if you want to witness this amazing tale in Kolkata next week. The stellar cast of this play includes Biyas Saha, Sukumar Chakraborty, Niharendu Banerjee, Krishna Sanyal.
Date: May 24, 2017
Venue: Girish Mancha, Kolkata.

Mainak 2 Monica The story of this beautiful play opens in a small village in Kolkata. Mainak is the younger of two children. He grows up shy, culturally effeminate, with an inclination to dress as a girl and do traditionally female activities around the house like the domestic chores, the games, the singing and dancing. As an indulged younger child, this behavior must at first have seemed merely precious. It becomes harder to ignore as he grows older. The cast includes Subrata Sengupta, Amit Das, Shahbaz Khan, Pritam Sarkar and you are invited with your friends and family to enjoy this evening in full peace.
Date: June 02, 2017
Venue: Madhusudan Mancha: Kolkata,

Abayab The play opens with a novelist in the middle of his new effort and his partner cum critic with whom he discusses the dreams, lifestyle, confusions and the conflicts in relationship through his characters. Almost in all the moves, his partner comes up with a different point of view. There comes a time in their life when unconsciously the creator and his surroundings are somewhat the mirror image of the characters from his novel and I, me and myself become the obvious chant of their clinical life. The cast of this play includes Saheb Bhattacharya, Sohini Sarkar, Srideep Chatterjee, Naba Kumar Banerjee, Avijit Lahiri and Priyanka Mondal. So make time for this as it’s going to one of the best plays in Kolkata you have ever seen.
Date: June 17, 2017
Venue: Tapan Theatre, Kolkata.

About the author

Archit Chawla

Coming from the land of temples and Gods, he is no 'saint'. Archit Chawla is a highly motivated, controlling and a narcissistic nut with an inclination towards sports. He loves to spend his time playing tennis, binge-watching DC and Marvel stuff and karaokeing in the places he shouldn't. He is a big time 'Don Draper' fan and you wouldn't want to argue with him when it comes to 'Game Of Thrones'. With a friendly personality and the famous curls, he is unarguably our first 'Go To' person.
