Watching the underdogs win and take the cake always feels good. After all, it reestablishes our belief in the system and gives us hope. Tales like these are in more ways than one tales about humanity triumphing even when the odds are not in its favour. It gives us hope that the Goliaths and rich kids can be defeated even when the game is rigged. At the same time, some showcase the grim reality behind the bright lights and the fan frenzy. So here’s our list of must watch sports films, in no particular order.
Those who harbour the opinion that wrestlers aren’t athletes only need to meet Mickey Rourke’s Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film explores all the dirty secrets of the world of professional wrestling. Things like performers using blades to add more blood and gore to the performance. The film is a bleak tale that will certainly leave you with admiration and sympathy for the sport and the performers.
When names like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro get associated with a movie, you know it’s going to be nothing less than a classic. Directed by Scorsese, Raging Bull is a biopic that gets into the psychology of getting into the ring and why it’s not always a fight about what’s right. Also, this boxing movie is nothing like Rocky. On the contrary, this is everything what Rocky is not, and that’s what makes it a classic.
Rocky won a Best Picture Oscar, and for a very good reason. The movie was a truly moving story about a broken-down boxer who has this one chance to prove to the world what he is capable of. As he goes against the World Heavyweight Champion, you are reminded that not all nemesis are villains. Stallone, who also wrote the screenplay and won an Oscar for it, crafted a tale that continues to inspire people. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call Rocky Balboa one of the most loved and inspirational fictional characters till date.
