Dangal proved to be the best Sports film we have seen, ever. Aamir Khan, with his bang- on the portrayal of Dronacharya Awardee Mahavir Singh Phogat, proved once again why he is the called “Mr. Perfectionist”. If Dangal reviews are anything to go by, this film has managed to surpass all the films of its genre and turned out to be the best description of sports and sportsmen on celluloid so far. No over-the-top patriotism, no love angle, no far stretched emotions, nothing; Dangal is all real. It doesn’t fictionalize the real elements to the point of absurdity, something which is very common in Bollywood, especially in biopics.
Over the years, so many sports films have been made in Bollywood. Of course, Dangal seems the best of the lot. Here are five other Sports Dramas/Biopics that have also inspired us.
1. Mary Kom
A biopic on India’s most successful women’s Boxing player, Mary Kom, the film fetched Priyanka Chopra so many awards for her portrayal of the boxing champion. The film brilliantly narrated the extraordinary tale of triumph against all odds, the struggle and work-life balance that Mary Kom had to deal with in real life. The film was the beautiful celebration of Kom’s determination to achieve her aim, her belief in herself, sportsmanship and the spirit of womanhood.
Another movie starring Aamir Khan with a Sports theme, Lagaan not only was a blockbuster movie in India, but it also impressed the global audiences at the Academy Awards. Inspirational and revolutionary both, it was the story of a group of ordinary villagers led by Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) fighting a ‘cricket-based war’ to end the cruelties of British Raj.
3. Chak De India
This film was one of the most powerful films of Shah Rukh Khan where he played the role of a coach to the Women’s National Hockey team. Chak De India was all about Sportsmanship, Patriotism, National honor and Teamwork.
Nagesh Kukunor’s National Award winning film, Iqbal starring Shreyas Talpade was not a biopic of any famous sportsman but a story of a deaf and dumb cricketer and how he emerged victorious fighting all the odds.
5. Paan Singh Tomar
A biopic of a National Steeplechase champion, Paan Singh Tomar, this film by Tigmanshu Dhulia won the National Award in 2012. Irrfan Khan also won the National Award for Best Actor. A powerful narrative, brilliant performance by Irrfan Khan and Dhulia’s stunning direction made this film unforgettable.
