There’s a good news for all fans of murder mysteries – the critically acclaimed British television series, Criminal Justice, is getting an Indian remake. The series aired for two seasons in 2008 and 2009, and garnered wide critical acclaim for being a unique thriller. The remake will be a web series catering to the Indian audiences, and the Newton star, Pankaj Tripathi, has been confirmed a role in it. He will be joining Jackie Shroff and Vikrant Massey in the series.
Pankaj Tripathi gained recognition through his role in Gangs of Wasseypur, Fukrey, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and of course, Newton, for which he also received a special mention at the National Film Awards. Tripathi had stated that he felt winning the National Award gave him a responsibility as to which roles he picked going forward, and this certainly seems like a step in the right direction.
It is not merely the cast that has us excited about the Indian remake of Criminal Justice, but also the director. The series will be directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, who also previously written and directed Paan Singh Tomar.
This is also not the first remake of the British series. Criminal Justice had been remade in America under the name The Night Of on HBO which starred Riz Ahmed, John Turturro, Bill Camp, and Amara Karan. Much like the original, the American remake also received positive attention from the critics and ended up winning four Emmy Awards, including getting the Best Actor in a Limited Series award for Riz Ahmed.
