Behind every successful love story, there is a wingman. And every single guy and girl out there will agree that we all need a friend who will serenade us with pep talk before approaching someone for the first time. Come to think of it, even Cupid is a wingman. But there are better ways to make sure two people fall in love than shooting them with arrows. That’s what these wingmen and wingwomen from our favorite films/TV shows show us:
1. Donkey – Shrek
A giant grin and a heart of gold is what defines our first wingman on the list. He helped Shrek rescue Fiona, helped Shrek propose his love for Fiona and has stayed by his side forever after.
2. Goose – Top Gun
Played by the charming Anthony Edwards, Goose is the epitome of a wingman. From helping Maverick (Tom Cruise) manoeuvre his flight to backing him up as he sang to the ladies, Goose makes us jealous that we don’t have someone like him in our lives.
3. Aman – Kal Ho Naa Ho
SRK always gets the girl. But in Kal Ho Na Ho, he lets his friendship triumph as he helps Naina find her soul-mate in Rohit.
4. Anjali – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Guess what, SRK does get the girl this time, all thanks to his daughter/winggirl Anjali. The eight-year old melts hearts along the way as she helps her father finally reunite with the love of his life.
5. Kumar – Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
We all need a stoner friend who will look out for your love interest. Even if it means getting aboard a plane, escaping a high-security prison and smoking pot with the President.
6. Genie – Aladdin
Genie takes wingmanship to a whole new level by bringing magic into the mix. He takes a poor street rat and makes him a prince for a day just so he can impress Jasmine.
7. Harry Potter – The Harry Potter Franchise
Speaking of magical love stories, Harry Potter helps his two best friends come together over their 7 years of school. From backing Ron to lending his shoulders to Hermoine, the boy who lived proves that friendship and love go hand in hand.
8. Barney Stinson – How I Met Your Mother
No list is complete without Barney Stinson. He is an expert at flirting with girls and often shares his expertise with his pal Ted. That includes randomly calling out to a girl and asking her, “Haaave you met Ted?”
9. Jacob Palmer – Crazy, Stupid, Love.
When your wingman is as good-looking as Ryan Gosling, you are sure to have second thoughts. But Jacob Palmer goes out of his way to help Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) get back in the game.
10. Everyone in American Pie
Literally everyone is helping Jim Levenstein get lucky – from his dad to his best friend’s mother. That’s the kind of world we would like to live in.
When you have friends like these, you can be pretty sure that your love life is sorted. Who is your favorite on-screen wingman of all time?
