10 Path-breaking Comic Superhero Movies of the Last Decade

The last decade has been a big win for superhero movies. It has been a decade since Marvel Studios began their three-phase project with Marvel Cinematic Universe and it has changed the face of superhero movies. Around a decade ago, we were in awe of Heath Ledger's Joker. The craze for superhero movies is now more than ever and the new generation of movie-goers are trying more than ever to keep up with the comic-lore. The two mega giants Marvel and DC, who have been in a healthy competition since their inception, have maintained that when it comes to establishing their cinematic universes. There have been a lot of amazing movies in the last 10 years, which have changed the coursed of comic-based superhero movies forever and here are some.

Iron Man (2008)
The movie that started it all. If the movie hadn't been as successful as it was, it would have been very difficult for Marvel to establish their cinematic universe. Robert Downey Jr. is born to play Iron Man and it would have been a totally different franchise without him. The rights of this movie have been passed around since 1990 when Universal took it up before Marvel reacquired them in 2002. Robert Downey Jr.'s past played a huge role in landing him the part of Tony Stark. The director Jon Favreau wished to cast a newcomer in the role. Iron Man single-handedly changed the course of superhero movies and is responsible for all the comic-based movies boom that we see and enjoy today.

Watchmen (2009)
Watchmen has been in development since 1986 when the writer of this limited series comics Alan Moore decided to write the screenplay for the live action movie. Zack Snyder who directed the movie was then already riding high on the success of 300 and this movie did manage to earn double of 300 in its early showing. Watchmen is perhaps the darkest superhero movie in the last decade, which is set in the time of Cold War. The dialogues of the movie are quotable and it helped in cementing the collaboration between Snyder and DC movies.

The Dark Knight (2008)
Christopher Nolan's contribution to the superhero genre will never be forgotten. He has spoiled Batman for future adaptations. Every movie henceforth would be compared to his trilogy. The Dark Knight is considered the best of the lot and much of that credit goes to Heath Ledger's Joker. Along with excellent performances by the actors, the dialogues played a huge role in making the movie the success it was.

Deadpool (2016)
Deadpool is definitely not the first R-rated superhero movie in the last decade. But it certainly is the most successful R-rated movie of all time. Full of meta humor and fourth wall breaks, this version of comic book movies had not been made yet but there was certainly a lot of demand for them. The movie was in talks since 2000 and was almost shelved until a leaked footage forced their hand to make a movie.

Wonder Woman (2017)
There is a thin line between movies with great concept and movies with great concept and execution. Wonder Woman is the only superhero movie with a woman as the lead character. She made her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and we couldn't get enough of her. In this day and age, where women are fighting to be treated equally, this movie could not have come at a better time.

Logan (2017)
Either you like the X-Men franchise or you don't; there is no middle way. Because of the character's popularity, until last year, Wolverine was the only mutant to get his stand-alone movie. While Deadpool was making headlines, the time for Wolverine was coming to a close. Wolverine movies although well-loved could not be called brilliant or emotional, except for the last one. The last one broke our heart at the sheer brilliance and the moving performance. It ended just when it was getting better.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
After the success of Avengers, the audience was ready to gobble up everything that Marvel served. While they didn't own the cinematic rights to some of their most popular characters, Marvel decided to promote their lesser known ones. Guardians of the Galaxy was certainly something out of the world (pun intended). It was the kind of fun superhero movie with enough mature jokes to make it a fun watch for everyone and who can forget the movie that introduced us to a hot version of Chris Pratt and the adorable Baby Groot.

Man of Steel (2013)
While Marvel was entering the Phase II of its grand plan, DC could not just boast about Nolan's Batman saga. It was time for DC to establish their own extended cinematic universe. DC was already doing a great job with its TV series but obviously, they had something grander in mind. Granted that they have to try and
fastrack their movies since Marvel had a great head start but that also makes a lot of room for experimentation.

Suicide Squad (2016)
Talking about experimentation, super villains teaming up to save the day is not unheard of but rarely seen. This movie proves that you can go a long way even if you just get the casting and music right. It is possible we might not see these characters again but they certainly left a mark.

The Avengers (2012)
Earth's mightiest heroes teaming up together to battle aliens and Loki. The movie set a huge benchmark not only for its successors but also for all the superhero team-ups that would come after it. The origin stories were intricately planned and it came together very well. Much of the credit goes to the casting directors who got the perfect people for the job.
