Verdict: A strong message subtly delivered through a series of light-hearted moments.
102 Not Out is an adaptation of an eponymous Gujarati play by Saumya Joshi. It is a special film, not just for the writer but also for many Bollywood fans because its legendary stars – Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor – will share screen space after 27 years. The two phenomenally talented actors have given brilliant performances in this movie that will surely win millions of hearts.
What's 102 Not Out About:
The movie revolves around a 102-year-old Dattatraya Vakharia (Big B) and his son, Babulal Vakharia aka Babu (Rishi Kapoor), who is 75 years old. Datta wants to break the record of the oldest living person in the world and has only about 16 years and a few months to go. Babu, on the other hand, has accepted his old age and behaves like every other elderly person with a set of obsessive compulsions. In order to break the record, Datta needs to be in a playful and chilled-out environment but his son Babu is making that difficult. So he decides to send Babu to an old-age home. When Babu declines to leave the house, Datta sets a few stipulations to be fulfilled by Babu over the next few months.
The film is filled with moments that crack you up. Even though the characters are 102 and 75 in age, the comedy is relatable for every age group. Both the leads have been played with such finesse, one couldn't imagine anyone else in the roles. To complement an actor as talented and experienced as Amitabh Bachchan, you need an equally adept actor like Rishi Kapoor. The screen oozes perfection in every frame. From the dialogue delivery to comic timing, characterization, and pace of the movie – everything is perfectly balanced.
Jimit Trivedi, who is best remembered as Goti from Bhool Bhulaiya, plays a very important role in the movie. Even though he is accompanied by such talented personalities, his character leaves an equally effective impression on the viewers. Apart from the performances, the steady flow of the story also pays compliments to the makers of the movie. The way it conveys a message through the layers of subtext and comedy is commendable.
The first half is full of fun and the second half completes the story perfectly. The music and background score effectively enhance some of the most important sequences. There's not a single dull moment in this movie.
