Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat‘s life, 2 States tells the story of Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt). When the two youngsters fall in love and decide to marry each other, they realize this isn’t half as easy as it seems. After winning each other over, the two must also charm the other’s family! This is easier said than done, as Krish and Ananya come from very different cultural and social backgrounds. The movie chronicles their attempts to convince their families and overcome the obstacles they face along the way.
Alia is endearing as Ananya Swaminathan. She brings a spark to the character, making her relatable and lovable. Arjun‘s performance, on the other hand, does not have the same charm as Alia‘s. However, both leads pale in comparison to the supporting cast. Revathy and Amrita Singh, who play the bride and groom’s mothers respectively, deliver stellar performances. Though their characters are as different as night and day, they have one thing in common – they are portrayed wonderfully. The duo (and their interaction) adds comic relief to the movie, never failing to make the viewer laugh.
The plot of the movie is also the recipe for a blockbuster. Though it may not have the most original story in the world, 2 States still manages to put a new spin on a tried-and-tested formula. It also has all the necessary elements for an entertaining film. Romance? Check. Drama? Check. Comedy? Check!
The soundtrack is yet another highlight of 2 States. Songs like Offo, Locha-E-Ulfat and Iski Uski are foot-tapping numbers that liven up the movie. This is further enhanced by the visuals, which are bright and fresh, making the movie an aesthetic treat!
2 States is also well-paced. The film moves fast and does not dwell on any scene longer than necessary. This keeps it from becoming dull or uninteresting.
However, the movie does have its low points. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know where the plot is heading. This predictability keeps the viewer from truly enjoying the film.
Arjun Kapoor‘s performance is also a tad disappointing, especially considering his previous body of work. His portrayal of Krish feels wooden, after his performances in Gunday and Ishaqzaade.
Why should you watch this film?
2 States is a film that rom-com fans are bound to enjoy. It gives a hilarious, yet realistic portrayal of cultural clashes. Moreover, the movie delivers a nice message, without ever getting too preachy. With its charming performances and wonderful soundtrack, 2 States is the perfect movie for summer viewing.
