2013 was a golden year for the Bollywood industry with more than three films crossing the 200 crores mark domestically and one film crossing 500 crores mark worldwide. From hits like Kai Po Che, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela, The Lunchbox etc., to a few not-so interesting movies like Boss, Besharam, Himmatwala etc., the year’s been a very interesting one for the avid film audience. The Khans and the Kapoors did rule Bollywood in 2013 as they have been doing in the last few decades, but other contemporaries like Deepika, Sushant Singh Rajput, Ranveer Singh have also made their foothold stronger in the year gone by. 2014 has begun as a war period amongst all these contemporaries.
As Hindi movies have a global appeal, there are many films due to release this year that are eagerly awaited. Here’s the list in random order:
The first film of a trilogy, Bombay Velvet, as the name suggests, is based on Bombay city. Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor shall be sharing screen space, amidst the background of a typical Bollywood masala movie comprising love, romance, violence set against the evolution of the city through the 50s to the 70s.
Aamir Khan ended the year 2013 with one of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters, Dhoom 3, and has now joined hands with director Rajkumar Hirani, director of successful movies like the Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots. The story has been kept a secret. But with the pairing of Aamir and Hirani, we can definitely expect a lot from the movie.
Happy New Year
Shah Rukh Khan is all set to work with his dear friend Farah Khan once again. Being the king of romance, we can except to see some of the charm that King Khan exudes on screen. The story line, however, has not been released as yet.
Sushant Singh Rajput is all set to become Detective Byomkesh Bakshi in Dibyendu Banerjee’s adaptation of the famous Bengali detective. Let’s see what this film has in store for us.
Alia Bhatt has a second release this year. This time, she will be working alongside current heartthrob, Arjun Kapoor. This movie is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name. It is a well-established fact that the movies based on Chetan Bhagat’s novels automatically become very entertaining.
Finding Fanny Fernandes
Deepika Padukone has delivered beyond the expectations that were originally set from the unfortunate failure of her films in the beginning of her career. Homi Adajania and Deepika Padukone have now teamed up for Finding Fanny Fernandes after the successful 2012 film, Cocktail. As of right now, any and every Deepika Padukone movie is a compulsory watch.
Directed by Dev Benegal and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, Bombay Samurai is an upcoming thriller movie starring powerhouse talents like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Nawazuddin Siddique among many others. As recently stated by Kareena, this movie is a very wacky one and she will be seen in a role unexpected from her previous movies.
King Khan will be seen in a second project in 2014 after Happy New Year. The plot is yet to be revealed but we can expect greatness from the film as it features the Baadshah of Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan will be portraying the role of a fan himself in the film, it’s life from the other side of the hedge for this superstar.
A few more movies like ‘Its Entertainment’ (Akshay Kumar, Tamannah),’ Gabbar’ (Akshay Kumar), ‘Humshakals’ (Saif Ali Khan) and ‘Phantom’ (Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif), ‘Kill Dil’ (Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra), Kick (Salman Khan), have also set the expectations quite high. Let’s wait and watch how the year turns for the films.
