Verdict: A lovely experimental film showcasing the art of storytelling.

“There are three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each differently.” – Robert Evans.

This may have been the inspiration for Arjun Mukherjee 3 Storeys in which he has cast some of the best actors in the business. So does he deliver with a stellar ensemble and a unique script?

What’s 3 Storeys About:

Richa Chadda plays the narrator who tells us stories of people living in the same chawl. While their lives are intertwined, they all have secrets of their own. Flory (Renuka Shahane) is grieving the death of her husband and son when Mr. Naik (Pulkit Samrat) comes in to purchase her house. In another story, Suhail (Ankit Rathi) is in love with Malini (Aisha Ahmed) but their families are dead against their relationship as they do not belong to the same religion. The third track is of Chadda’s character and a police officer who has a crush on her. Sharman Joshi shows up in the final story which involves two couples.

What Works:

3 Storeys is a not the run-of-the-mill kind of a film and doesn't use any of the tropes of a Bollywood entertainer. The non-linear narrative works big time by leaving you at the edge of your seat. Throughout the movie, you will wonder what happens next and the director manages to hold your attention by springing surprises every now and then. The performances are top notch as all the actors are at their best. It’s a bummer that we don’t get to see Renuka Shahane on the big screen more often as she is easily the pick of the lot.

What Could Have Been Better:

While the twists manage to shock you, the slow pace of the movie can make one impatient. The build-up takes a long time, so you may get a bit restless but rest assured that it all adds up in the end.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Films like 3 Storeys are rare. When many filmmakers play to the gallery, Arjun Mukherjee’s effort to try something new is laudable. Go watch this to support such cinema and be wowed by the narrator’s imagination.
