The 30th Television Critics Association Awards: The highlights

The Television Critics Association Awards aren’t known for being as glamorous or as star-studded as other award ceremonies. However, this non-televised awards ceremony has always been the perfect precursor to the Emmy Awards. Not only have they given a platform to shows which have been snubbed by the Emmys, but they have also helped us predict the outcome of the Primetime Awards. With the TCAs behind us and the Emmys quickly approaching, let’s take a look at this year’s highlights:

Breaking Bad took home the evening’s big prize

Awards that pit one genre against another are always hard to predict. This is the case with the Program of the Year category, in which comedies and dramas compete for the title.

Unsurprisingly, this award went to AMC’s acclaimed drama, Breaking Bad, for the second year in a row. What did come as a surprise though, was the fact that the show took home only one award.

True Detective and Veep were the big winners of the night
HBO’s True Detective and Veep won the other major awards of the night.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus secured the award for Individual Achievement in Comedy, in addition to her SAG Award. With last year’s win and a nomination under her belt this year, it seems as if she’s the front-runner for the Emmy as well.

True Detective
got the statuette for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials. Additionally, Matthew McConaughey was rewarded for his performance. The actor continued his winning streak by also winning the award for Individual Achievement in Drama. Though this would place him ahead in the race for the Emmy, it will be interesting to see who will win the award. After all, the other nominees in the category include heavyweights like Jon Hamm, Jeff Daniels, Bryan Cranston and Kevin Spacey.

Netflix cemented its reputation as a network to watch out for

With House of Cards‘ multiple nominations and Orange is the New Black winning Outstanding New Program, Netflix has proved all its doubters wrong. Even the harshest of critics has to admit that Netflix is now a source of good-quality original programming. This might just mean that shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards get the recognition they deserve at the Emmys!

These were just some of the highlights of the 30th TCA Awards. Want to know all the winners of the night? Look no further, here are all the winners of the night:
