4 reasons why Piku is the perfect summer flick

What do Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan have in common? All three actors have consistently delivered great performances, uniting the best parts of mainstream and offbeat cinema. We were overjoyed when we heard that they would be seen together in Shoojit Sircar‘s Piku – A slice-of-life film about an ordinary family and their extraordinary adventures. With the film all set to hit theatres this week, we decided to look at the numbers and the facts, and what we found didn’t disappoint. If you are still unsure about Piku, here are 4 reasons why it is the perfect film to watch this summer:

1. Prior to Piku, Juhi Chaturvedi has only written the story, screenplay and dialogues for one film – Vicky Donor. The movie, which was also directed by Shoojit Sircar, earned Juhi the Filmfare Award for Best Story at the 58th Filmfare Awards. If Piku follows the same pattern, it’s safe to say that we have a remarkable plot and execution to look forward to!

2. Shoojit Sircar‘s films have that perfect summer vibe going for them, and we’ve got the numbers to prove it. Vicky Donor, the filmmaker’s most commercially successful film to date, was released in April. Though Madras Cafe and Yahaan have been successful as well, none of them have made as much of a mark as Vicky Donor. With Piku all set to be Sircar’s next summer release, it looks like the odds are in its favor!

3. May is a good month for Deepika Padukone too! The actress has only had one release in May – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The film, which grossed over INR 311 crore, is the actress’ third most commercially successful of all time! And that’s not all, the film is also Deepika’s second-highest rated film on IMDb, second only to Karthik Calling Karthik.

4. All of Deepika’s films to cross the INR 100 crore mark have hit the sweet spot when it comes to duration. Her films that have clocked in between 2 and 3 hours have managed to rule the box office. While they have been long enough to forge a connection with the characters, they haven’t been long enough to be snoozefests either. It looks like Piku, with a duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes, is going to be no exception to the rule!

With its exemplary cast and crew, and quirky premise; Piku seemed like the quintessential summer flick right from the trailer. Now that we’ve got the numbers to back this, all signs point towards Piku being THE film to watch this weekend. Are you as excited as we are?
