4 Surprise hits of the year 2015 (South films)

It’s always easy to spot a blockbuster film. As the pre-release publicity for the film commences, the hype starts building. 2015 also saw many blockbusters, such as I, Baahubali, Thani Oruvan that dominated the box office. This year, also saw several smaller films that made a huge impact. These films may have had a less known star, or may have been made on a moderate budget. Nobody pinned their hopes on these films, in particular. But they became sleeper hits that shine. They started off with minimal buzz, and soon with word-of-mouth reviews, the audience started lining up for the films. These were some of the sleeper hits of 2015.

Premam (Malayalam)

This list is quite probably incomplete without Malayalam cinema’s highest-grossing film of 2015. Starring rising star Nivin Pauly, this film told a simple tale- about George who encounters three women in different stages of his life. Premam made us fall in love with red velvet cakes and Kerala, and taught us that beauty lies in the everyday. Premam is a simple and heart-warming film, that turned out to be a sensation. And now, should be called a trend-setting, cult classic.

36 Vayadhinile (Tamil)

A remake of the hit Malayalam film, How Old Are You?, 36 Vayadhinile was marked as the comeback film for Jyothika, who returned to screen after a hiatus. In an industry where hero-centric films and masala potboilers are touted to be blockbusters, 36 Vayadhinile proved to be different. The film put the spotlight on the struggles and realities of a woman’s success and self-identity.

Rangi Taranga (Kannada)

Made on a shoe-string budget of 1.5 crores and starring new comers, Rangi Taranga is one of the best suspense thrillers Kannada cinema has seen in recent times. The initial buzz about the film was low, however with strong word-of-mouth publicity, and positive reviews from the critics, this film became the top grossing Kannada film of 2015.

Kumari 21F (Telugu)

Although the technical crew of this film boasted of names such as Sukumar, Rathnavelu and Devi Sri Prasad, this film starred two young actors – Raj Tarun and Heebah Patel – who were relatively new in tinsel town. The film’s bold and daring theme caught everyone’s attention and made this film an overnight success.
