After having waited with bated breath for the longest time, the trailer of Bombay Velvet was finally released today by Fox Star Studios. The movie, which has been under development for a while now, has been pegged as the most awaited film of the year. Of course it is. It has a stellar cast and an ingenious director behind the camera. The final product is sure to be epic. But for now, all we have is a trailer. And that is good enough as there are some great elements in there. Here are 5 things that impressed us about the first Bombay Velvet trailer:
1. Ye hai Bombay meri jaan
This isn’t the first time a period piece has been set in the city of Bombay… ahem… Mumbai. But from the looks of it, the production team has nailed it in this film as the the glitz, the glamour, the horse races, the cabaret and much more has been captured to the T. When a film has the name Bombay in its very title, it better capture the soul of this crazy city. And looks like Kashyap has left no stone unturned to ensure the same.
Yes, this is one pairing our eyes have been craving for. And the trailer shows how superb Ranbir and Anushka look together. As Johnny Balraj, Ranbir Kapoor can be seen showcasing a gamut of emotions, while also flexing his muscles. And then we have Anushka Sharma as Rosie Noronha, a singer who is famous among the Bombay elites. Two polar characters with dark secrets who lock lips enough number of times to get our hearts racing.
3. KJo in the limelight
Karan Johar is Khambata – a mustachioed baddie, who helps Johnny achieve his dream of becoming a “Big Shot”. Not much is known about his character at this moment. But it is sure refreshing to see the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director in front of the camera instead of behind it. While this is not the first time he is making an appearance in a Bollywood movie (he had a small role as SRK’s friend in DDLJ), the backstory behind his casting is what’s interesting. KJo and Kashyap have been at loggerheads with each other for the longest time, before burying the hatchet and uniting to create magic.
4. A new direction for Anurag Kashyap
When you think of an Anurag Kashyap film, the first thing that comes to one’s mind is gritty dialogue littered with abusive language, character actors, an intense storyline and some bloody revenge on the side. Bombay Velvet shows glimpses of Kashyap’s trademark directing style, but this is a whole new ball game for the stupendous director, who is now working with a bigger budget and an established studio. It will be fun to see how he holds back on the abuses and still delivers a great cinematic piece.
5. Boom goes the weasel
The trailer has been rather neatly edited, where the characters are subtly introduced and their interplay builds up like a crescendo. And before you know it, BOOM! Explosives, screaming, revenge and Ranbir going guns a-blazing in full-on Tony Montana style. The ending of the trailer leaves us on a cliffhanger, where Johnny wants to find Rosie and kill her. Why? OMG so much excitement already!
