5 Biopics of Common Men: From Real to Reel

It’s raining biopics. Right from the lives of celebrities to sportsmen, cinema’s fascination with real life stories isn’t new. Stories of influential personalities have been making their way to the silver screen for a while now. The film industry is all about glam and glitter, and with increasing biographical films based on eminent personalities, the common man’s story often gets unnoticed. Yes, there have been famous personalities who have led extraordinary lives and it is no surprise movies are made based on them. However, there have been instances when some common people with uncommon stories made headlines and everybody including Bollywood took notice. We give you a lowdown of some such biographical films. Read on.

 
Manjhi – The Mountain Man (2015)
Manjhi is the story of a landless Bihari from the Musahar community who single-handedly built a road through the Gahlor Ghati hills using only a hammer and chisel. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the role of Dashrath Manjhi a.k.a The Mountain Man, while Radhika Apte played Manjhi’s wife. 
 
Hawaizaada (2015) 
Hawaizaada is based on the life of scientist Shivkar Bapuji Talpade who is believed by many to have invented the airplane in 1895, before the Wright Brothers did. Ayushmann Khurrana was seen in a nerdy avatar essaying the role of Talpade. The movie didn’t really set the box office on fire but it was unique and brought to attention a historical figure not talked of much otherwise.
 
Paan Singh Tomar (2012)
Not many had heard of Paan Singh Tomar before Tigmanshu Dhulia’s film of the same name. The movie was based on the life of an Indian army soldier, Paan Singh Tomar who won a gold medal at the Indian National Games, but circumstanes led him to become a notorious bandit. Irrfan Khan played the titular role in the film and won many accolades for it too.
 
Neerja (upcoming)
Sonam Kapoor is currently working on Ram Madhwani’s Neerja. She plays the braveheart air hostess Neerja Bhanot in the movie. Neerja Bhanot was the Pan Am flight attendant who was killed while saving passengers from terrorists on board the Pan Am Flight 73. Bhanot was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military award for bravery. 
 
Aligarh (upcoming)
After making the award winning biopic on the human rights activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi (Shahid), Hansal Mehta plans to bring yet another; the tale of a homosexual professor of Aligarh Muslim University, played by Manoj Bajpai. The film titled Aligarh and is inspired by the real life story of the professor who was suspended a few months before his retirement after he was caught having consensual sex with a rickshaw driver. A unique tale which might raise a few eyebrows for sure.
