5 Bollywood Movies Worth Becoming a Cult

Another year has passed by but our love for Bollywood just keeps growing. The audience makes or breaks a movie. There is no formula for a movie to set box office records and therefore while some become blockbusters, many others crash. But some movies surpass the normal brackets of being good or bad and become classics gradually. These films are what we call cult films. The best example of a cult movie is Andaz Apna Apna. A series of films that initially flopped have successfully become cult classics later.

Hey Ram
hey ramThe movie turns 17 this 2017 but has still has not gotten the deserved appreciation. A period crime drama film, Hey Ram beautifully weaved the threads of communalism and jingoism with emotions of love, pain, and suffering. Unfortunately, the film was a box office failure at the time of its release. Not to forget, the powerful lead cast that included Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Rani Mukerji.

Socha Na Tha

Socha Na Tha is a romantic comedy, directed by Imtiaz Ali and starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia, which failed initially but with time has earned praises for its slow paced yet aesthetic character development coupled with its unconventional comedy.

Khamosh
khamoshThis whodunnit murder mystery directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra was much ahead of its time. But surprisingly, the film was not at all popular at the time of its release. Distributors refused to buy it due to its unconventional storyline. This film starred the best ever actors from the film fraternity like Shabana Azmi, Amol Palekar, Sudhir Mishra, Pankaj Kapur, and Sadashiv Amrapurkar, among many. Off lately, cinephiles have come to realize its true worth.

No Smoking
no smoking-compressedNo Smoking, an Anurag Kashyap creation, was a box office disaster due to its complex story, which was too much for the audiences to comprehend. It blurs the thin line between reality and illusion and therefore failed to get the required attention. One of the best performances by John Abraham, this is definitely a cult classic that needs more eyes and ears.

Gulaal
gulaalStarring Kaykay Menon and directed by Anurag Kashyap, this one is a strong commentary on the existing power politics with themes of legitimacy, injustice, hypocrisy in the society central to it, Gulaal disappointed the audiences when it released. The film’s gritty storyline, exceptional character development, and impressive script definitely need more watchers. This one is a must-watch film in every cinephile’s list.
