Indians settled in abroad have been able to carve a successful niche for themselves and their country in varied fields. While we are most famous for our IT competence, we are also well-known for our achievements in the creative sphere. Filmmaking, for instance. Besides the technical knowhow, this art requires another level of creative talent. And while we have been treated to some quality cinema by some of the most celebrated filmmakers in Bollywood over the years, there have been those who left the Indian shores behind to hit a few out of the park and receive global recognition for their work in film industries overseas. 

Here's a look at some of the most famous Indian-origin foreign directors whose work has been appreciated globally.

Mira Nair

Gurinder Chadha

No doubt she portrays some of the most stereotypical aspects of the Indian society but has been successful in also exploring the struggles of an Indian raised in the city of London.

Deepa Mehta
