On one hand, he has won our hearts with unconventional performances in films like Rockstar, Barfi!, etc. On the other, he has made us cringe with despair with certain choices. Ranbir Kapoor
has become the quintessential heartthrob of Bollywood in just 7 years. Women swoon due to his charming demeanour, while the men envy his style. This begs the question: Why on earth would he agree to act in some of the most senseless films ever made in Bollywood? Ah, Ranbir! If only you could avoid giving us nightmares in the form of these films. Sigh! Here are 5 deals we wish Ranbir hadn’t cracked at all!
Considering the fact that it was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali venture, Saawariya gained a lot of hype even before its release. The film was Ranbir’s big break in Bollywood and let’s be honest, we had high hopes from the Kapoor clan’s latest talent. Much to our disappointment, Saawariya turned out to be a huge box office failure and received a lot of flak for its unconvincing portrayal. Dancing around in the nude with only a towel to cover-up? Not the perfect launchpad, we’d say!
4. Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008)
Even though the film was a commercial success, Ranbir’s role as a womaniser received mixed responses from the critics. After his debut debacle, we expected Ranbir to surprise us, but unfortunately that did not happen. The actor continued to play the role of a cheesy lover in what looked like an extension of his debut film. Well, what can you do when you’re stuck in a contract?
3. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009)
This was the year that gave Ranbir the much needed career push with films like Wake Up Sid and Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year. Both films stood as testimony to Kapoor’s acting potential. However, with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Ranbir once again went downhill. A slapstick comedy with an entirely meaningless plot didn’t really go down well with the critics. The actor himself was disappointed, to say the least.
Yeah, that’s what happens after you watch a terrible film!
What happens when a good actor meets a bad script? A disaster. Anjaana Anjaani looked like an out-and-out failure much before its release. Despite starring Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir, the film did little to evoke any feeling towards its actors or the story. After watching him play a mature role in Rajneeti earlier that year, expectations from Ranbir had soared sky-high. Alas, it wasn’t to be. The actor clearly struggled to do any justice to the role and ended up in a soup.
I don’t even….
Well, where do we even begin. WHY, Ranbir, why? After convincing us that you’re a capable actor, why would you ruin it for us? Seriously, what’s up with the street-side tacky clothing and ugly mannerisms? What exactly prompted you to choose a script like that? And if his unbearable screen presence wasn’t enough, his parents were a part of the film too. Now that’s a complete hall of shame! Besharam was a nightmare that we never woke up from, ever.
With Roy slated to release this Friday, we hope Ranbir Kapoor finds a fresh rhythm in the new year. We can’t wait to watch how the story unfolds. Can you?
