"I believe it's better to be a baddie because baddies have a longer shelf life, and don't have to depend on looks." says the Bad Man of Bollywood.
Gulshan Grover, the one and the only, "Bad man", is one of the most famous villains of B-town. He has featured in more than 400 movies till date and has played the bad guy in more than many of them. His character Kesariya Vilayati in the movie Ram Lakhan is counted among his best performances (Do not google; Kesariya Vilayati is THE Bad Man). He is also one of the first celebrities to be a part of a Hollywood movie (and played a baddie in it too).
One cannot picture him playing a good guy. Nope, cannot. But he has played positive roles in few movies too. Today, as Mr. Grover celebrates his 61st birthday, let's forget the negative characters for a while and focus on the positive. Here is a list of movies that the Bad Man played a good man in.
I am Kalam
A poor kid changing his name to Kalam after learning that even the president suffered from hardships during his childhood is adorable and also the story of I am Kalam. Gulshan Grover plays the role of Bhati, the Dhaba owner at which Chotu (Harsh Mayar) is left by his mother to work. The character of Bhati was strong and Grover pulled it off with ease. He was also nominated for a National Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for this role.
Kaun Kitne Paani Mein
A film revolving around the pros and cons of caste system, natural resource management and politics, Kaun Kitne Paani Mein was a subtle take on the issue of water crisis. Gulshan Grover plays Kharu Pehalwan, father of Radhika Apte in the movie and a reputed MLA with huge plans for a political future. Kharu Pehalwan makes many relevant statements for environmental conservation in the film.
Taarzan – The Wonder Car
A car comes to life to avenge a crime is the plot of this movie. Gulshan Grover plays Inspector Khurana, a cop we would want in real life. Understanding, practical and golgappa lover. His best scene is when he bails Raj (Vatsal Sheth) and arrests Rakesh Kapoor (Pankaj Dheer) after looking at his haunted car.
Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat
The film deals with the basic rights of an individual. Rani Mukerji plays the protagonist. She is married in to a family that time and again tries to get rid of her, but she stays. Among all the interesting characters in the movie, one is Gyani Kartar Singh played by Grover. A good-hearted man who helps everyone he finds in need. His first scene has him adopting a pickpocket after knowing he is an orphan.
Dil Maange More
Mr. Grover plays A. R. Rehman, the owner of a music store where Nikhil (Shahid Kapoor) works. The multi-starrer rom-com didn't do well at the box-office and was considered to be a mild entertainer. But the film did have a few interesting moments thanks to A. R. Rehman and his love gyaan for Nikhil.
While this list tells us of Gulshan Grover's versatility, we still think that he is best at being the baddie. And we all agree with you, Mr. Grover, nobody else can play the Bad Man like you.
A very happy birthday to you Mr. Grover.
