5 Hollywood Movies That Grossed $400 or Less

A lot of effort goes into making a movie. There are countless hours and a huge amount of manpower spent on conceptualization, casting and finally production. The work never ends at shooting, as there are loads of things to do after the shoot is over – such as editing, the test runs with the sample audience reactions and after the final edits, the package is presented in front of us. Movies are works of art and like all pieces of art, many of them are not appreciated until much later after the release. There are some that may not sit favorably with the audience but they manage to cover their production cost due to the curiosity these films create. There are some movies whose box office income is so low, that they even go beyond what might be considered a flop movie. Here are some movies, which have earned less than USD 400 at the US box office.

The Marsh

An Oscar winner starrer can rake in profits on the fame of the actor. But sometimes you need a lot more than that to even break even. With a budget of about 7 million USD this movie made a total earning of 336 USD and the theatres had it thrown out in less than a week. This supernatural thriller starred Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and Gabrielle Anwar. The movie was appreciated by the critics but the box office had different opinions altogether.

This tale based on Mary McGukian’s addiction lasted a total of three days in theatres earning about 279 USD in total. This movie won the San Diego Film Festival award in the year 2007 and starred talented actors like Jennifer Tilly (who won the best actress for this movie) along with Andie MacDowell, Colm Feore and Rupert Graves.

Dog Eat Dog

Here’s another film that proves that critical acclaim doesn’t necessarily mean record-smashing box office records. This movie won the World Cinema Grand Jury award at Sundance Festival and was screened at numerous other festivals. When the time for it came to be screened at the box office, this Colombian crime drama managed to earn only 80 USD.

Storage 24

With a production cost of about 1.6 million USD, this movie earned 76 USD at the box office and this resulting in painful losses. Ironically, this monster flick has not received the worst ratings, with Rotten Tomatoes rating it at about 43% on the Tomatometer.

Zyzzyx Road

Pronounced as ‘Zye-zix’, this Katherine Heigl and Tom Sizemore starrer thriller managed to earn not more than 30 USD at the box office. It was only screened at one theatre in Dallas for one week and a total number of six people had seen this movie. This is the lowest amount a Hollywood Movie has earned. The loss can be because of lack of theatres screening it. But even for a single theatre screening, the total is tragically low.
The list doesn’t criticize the quality of the movies, as many of them have been appreciated by glowing responses from the critics. They have just managed to bomb at the box office really hard. Give them a try this week and let us know how you find them in the comments below and don’t forget to share.
