Do you have the post holiday blues?
Are you feeling blue? Or sad? Or stuck in a funk? Did the holiday season leave you feeling lost and alone? Are these too many questions in a row?
Alright then, what you need now is a pick-me-up movie experience. Some popcorn, some company, and a couple of films in a queue. In fact, the world of cinema has numerous films for you. From action, adventure, comedy, horror, romantic-comedy, tragedy et cetera, et cetera all the way to zombie apocalypse.
As the New Year starts, we are faced with a whole selection of what-ifs, may-bes, resolutions, promises and hopes. The world is giving us a chance to start a new journey, to take a leap into the unknown, to shake off the leashes and live the dreams that never entered our minds.
The best part of a post-holiday blues movie fest is that, you can choose the films which reflect your mood, or rather the ones which will take your mind out of the funk.
So what’s your poison? I don’t mean drink. Here is a short list for you:
If you prefer an underdog story, you can’t go wrong with Rocky.
A classic film about an underdog who gets his chance to make it big. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? That’s because it is. The story was written by Sylvester ‘Talks funny’ Stallone. Fun fact: He got nominated for the Oscars for his screenplay. The movie takes you on this journey about chances and how life is full of them. When the blues hit, just push play and watch this movie. The training montage of Rocky is enough to get you out of your funk and into training mode. Every tough break is just going to make you stronger. As you watch the movie, the feeling that the worst situations are just situations afterall. All you need to do is to take your shot, even if it is one-in-a-million, it’s still worth the chance. So run up the stairs, and raise your hands above your head. It’s “All about going the distance.” Do you have it in you?
For all the comedy fans out there, there are a bunch of films for the blues. My personal favorite is Some Like It Hot
. Directed by Billy Wilder
and starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon
and the exquisitely beautiful Marilyn Monroe, this movie is one of those that can turn any frown upside-down. It’s a film that has broke musicians, best friends, gorgeous blondes, mob bosses and cross-dressing. What could possibly go right? Absolutely nothing. The jokes fly thick and fast. You get to marvel at the comic timing of Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. And surprise, surprise, Marilyn’s blonde bombshell act is picture perfect. By the way boys, look out for the Marilyn’s song towards the end of the film. And watch out for her wink, it’s a killer (you will know what I mean).
All you rom-com fans, don’t fret, I haven’t forgotten you. It’s the superbly casted Love Actually
by Richard Curtis
(No relation to the Tony chap from the above paragraph, so don’t Google just yet). We have the whole list of who’s who of British cinema. With big names such as Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightly, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Liam Neeson and many more. The best part about this film is that every story interweaves and creates this amazing tapestry. The movie is set during the holiday season. As we watch, the story takes us on this ride where every aspect of the holiday season comes to life. Mind you, even the sad ones. So don’t feel like you have lost hope, the world isn’t such a terrible place. Pop this movie on, get the kettle going, make some popcorn, grab a quilt, may be someone to share that quilt with and smile.
Action films are great for those days when you are feeling low. The stories are punchy (no pun intended) and succinct. Bad guys shoot up things, damsels are in distress and some dastardly plan is in place to destroy the world or mall. In swoops, the hero on a rope or something long and rope like. Shoots the baddies, saves the girl, cracks a couple of quips and rides/hops/walks/limps/rolls off into the sunset. And the best example of this is Lethal Weapon
. The first one. The old school “I am too old for this sh@%” quote makes everyone smile. Starring Danny Glover and Mel Gibson, this buddy-cop film takes us on a wild ride of guns, bullets, car chases, explosives, strait-jackets, high falls and in the end we get to see a bromance evolve. Leave your worries and your funk behind. Get lost in a world of action and leave your worries behind.
And finally, for the animation fans out there, you guys are tough. The post-holiday blues, what is that? Any Disney movie will do or Pixar too. But then again, there are those days when you just feel like watching a movie which make you smile from the bottom of your heart. I’d suggest Shrek
. An amazing film about true love and being true to who you are. The movie has some amazing voices such as Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow and Eddie Murphy. The premise is simple and elegant. But the execution of this story is what takes your breath away. The world of fairy-tales comes alive with modern touches. There is a dragon too. Laugh and smile your post-holiday blues away with this lovely and touchingly-poignant film.
In fact, there is a movie which will take care of those blues right away. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
will put a huge smile on your face. This is a film where you will be captivated by the sheer beauty of the world. Beautifully-shot and wonderfully-made, this is one sure-fire way for you to shake those blues off and start the New Year with a song in your heart and a skip in your step.
I know that there are many more films out there which will make you smile. Drop the title in the comment box and let us know about your choice. Till then, Hakuna Matata.
