The apocalypse as a concept has been dreaded over the years. Writers have time and again penned down their nightmarish imaginations of the apocalypse. As a result, the Earth has been annihilated on screen a hundred times over.
Here are five of the best films that depict the end of the world:
These Final Hours (2013) – Zak Hilditch
When a rolling curtain of fire is steadily rolling down the globe, peeling it like an onion, people have been given their final 12 hours to bid farewell to the world. James (Nathan Philips), the protagonist, decides to make his way to a rave party. On his way, however, his plans change when he attempts to save a girl from being raped. His mission, now, is to reunite the girl with her estranged family.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) – Lorene Scafaria
As an asteroid nears Earth, Dodge Petersen (Steve Carell) finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to embark on a symbiotic journey with his neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley). While the rest of the world is busy hallucinating about their last days, the two individuals realize their love for each other.
Melancholia (2011) – Lars von Trier
A young girl Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), are victims of depression. As the imminent destruction of Earth due to a collision with the rogue planet Melancholia looms large, the two find their lives in shambles.
Wall E (2008) – Andrew Stanton
Humans land up buying so much stuff that the world eventually becomes an uninhabitable trash heap. Leaving behind waste-collecting robots to clean up their mess, humans take off into space. Turns out the mechanical creatures decide that the mess is not worth the effort.
Last Night (1998) – Don McKellar
The world is given a deadline and chaos breaks out. While some people choose to spend their last moments with their families, others engage in acts of pleasure. Patrick (Don McKellar), a widower, finds Sandra, a woman who is looking for her husband, Duncan. When they discover that he has been killed by a rioter, Sandra urges Patrick to join the suicide pact previously shared with her husband.
