5 must-attend music festivals of North-East India

You know about Sunburn, NH7 Weekender and Storm Festival. But there is so much more to the festival circuit in India. The trend of music festivals is booming like never before. There are more large-scale music festival options in India, than ever before. However, it isn’t quite justified if you miss out the sheer mention of the music festivals from the North-Eastern part of India. With time, the North East has become a primary location for music fans looking to see a variety of artists at one fell swoop.

Often termed as the ‘unexplored paradise’, the North-east has much more to offer than flora and fauna. The music scene in the North-East has always been diverse and colorful, just like its culture. With a unique blend of folk, classical and rock genre, the music echoes the beauty of North East. Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya is also called the ‘Rock Capital of India’. Hornbill Festival
Where: Kohima, Nagaland
When: December 1-10
Why must you attend? For starters, there are 16 major tribes along with many sub-tribes in Nagaland. Hornbill Festival brings together all the 16 tribes.

 

 

It is a week-long celebration of the rich heritage and traditions. Located in the picturesque Naga Heritage village – Kimasa, Hornbill Festival has something for everyone. Chill with a mug of the finest rice beer, stay in the traditional Naga huts, shop in the Night Bazaar and give yourself a gastronomic delight with the amazing food. And the best part: witness a multi-stage musical extravaganza.

Ziro Festival of Music
Where: Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh
When: September
Why must you attend? People, mark your calender. This a festival that mustn’t be missed. As the festival slogan goes: Eat, Drink, Merry, Ziro Festival is all about music and fun!

 

 

Last year some of the best bands in India performed there. Shaa’ir & Func, Menwhopause, Sky Rabbit, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley and The Dust… the list just gets better. One of the savviest festival in the North-East, Shillong Autumn festival is more than just music. There is a diverse crowd of rock, goth, metal, and punk fans. Brahmaputra Beach Festival
Where: Guwahati, Assam
When: January/February
Why must you attend? Are you more of an adventure-lover? Brahmaputra Beach Festival offers a lot more than you can imagine.

 

 

Water rafting, canoeing, kayaking and Aero sports like ballooning, paragliding and hang gliding, beach cricket… and much more. In the backdrop of the mighty Brahmaputra, the beach festival has its own charm. You get a more relaxed crowd, and less general chaos. Plus, there is great food!

Monolith Festival
Where: Mawphlang, Meghalaya

Why must you attend? Meghalaya is just the best. Monolith festival is focused on showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi Tribe of Meghalaya. For those who are in lookout for a calm and peaceful festival experience, head to the Abode of Clouds, Meghalaya. The festival’s debut was a huge success and provides an experience unlike any other.
